| Problem - Leaky ducts were not readily identified
In February of 2008, Niagara Hospice called in Indoor Air Professionals to video inspect their ductwork to pinpoint confirmed leakage that was creating cold spots throughout the facility. Staff used space heaters to keep warm. Balancing reports confirmed leakage of 28%. Although no obvious openings were found through the video scope inspection, suspected leaks in the longitudinal and transverse seams were suspected. A light film of dust was noted in the supply and a heavier build-up in the return ductwork.
Solution - Two step process efficiently cleans and seals
Indoor Air Professionals invited their Strategic Alliance partner, Carrier Corporation to provide their patented AEROSEAL duct sealing process. The first step was to clean the systems. Once the ductwork system was zoned and blocked properly for cleaning, very little additional preparation was needed to apply AEROSEAL. Immediately after the cleaning while the zoning and blocking was still in place, AEROSEAL was applied as the second step.
Results
The AEROSEAL system's computer monitors and analyzes in real time the improvement in leakage. AEROSEAL achieved the following results:
Return Ductwork:
Pre Leakage - 280 CFM
Post Leakage - 100 CFM
Improvement: 64% reduction in duct leakage.
Supply Ductwork:
Pre Leakage - 273 CFM
Post Leakage - 103 CFM
Improvement: 62% reduction in duct leakage

What is AEROSEAL? [click here for fact sheet]
AEROSEAL is a patented air duct sealing technology from Carrier Corporation that is the most effective, affordable and viable method of sealing ductwork systems within commercial buildings. AEROSEAL effectively seals ductwork from the inside out by using UL tested and approved sealing material. The AEROSEAL system injects a fog of aerosolized sealant particles into a pressurized duct system. The particles stay suspended with in the air stream and are not deposited on the duct surfaces until they reach the leaks. As the air stream makes a sharp turn to exit through any leak, the particles skid out and smash onto the leak edges and build up to span and seal the holes, up to 5/8 of an inch, without coating the ductwork.
Indoor Air Professionals and Carrier - AEROSEAL: Strategic Alliance
Indoor Air Professionals and Carrier AEROSEAL have created a Strategic Alliance to provide air duct cleaning and sealing sequentially to achieve two primary objectives:
1) to provide the most effective methods for restoring air duct systems to achieve both energy and environmental benefits.
2) to provide more practical and cost effective projects for commercial facilities.
